Dead Herring Gull

Herring gull - Larus argentatus

Herring gull - Larus argentatus

I live about 100 meters from the Northsea coast, so I regulary make a walk on the dike.

During one of these walks, I found the dead body of a juvenile Herring gull (Larus argentatus). After checking if the gull was wearing a bird ring (it didn’t) I took this picture of its head.

Angle Shades Tail

Angle shades - Phlogophora meticulosa

Angle shades - Phlogophora meticulosa

Continuation of yesterday.

At the other end of the Angle shades (Phlogophora meticulosa) you see the anal prolegs.

Prolegs are stumpy legs that let the caterpillar climb very well, even up vertical surfaces. Caterpillars usually have five pairs of stumpy prolegs on the abdomen. Prolegs disappear when the larva changes into a moth.

Angle shades - Phlogophora meticulosa

Continuation of yesterday.

Since the larva of the Agle shades (Phlogophora meticulosa) was sitting on a leaf in my studio, I had plenty of time to make more pictures in detail.

Here you have a view on its head with ocelli (simple eyes), setae (sensory hairs) and three frontlegs.
Caterpillars have three pairs of so-called Thoracic legs. These are jointed legs, attached to their thorax. These six legs remain when the larva turns into a moth.

Angle Shades

Angle shades - Phlogophora meticulosa

This morning I discovered this larva in a gap between the outdoor lamp and the wall on my shed, probably looking for place to pupate.
You don’t really expect to see larvae this time of the year.

It’s the caterpillar of Angle shades (Phlogophora meticulosa). The larvae of Angle shades can be found the whole year round. During mild winterdays you even can find them nourishing.
When in danger most of the larvae curl up and stay motionless for a while. A good moment to make a full frame picture.

Elastic Oysterling

Elastic Oysterling – Panellus mitis

A rather nice mushroom, especially from underneath, is this Elastic oysterling (Panellus mitis). Shell- to kidney-shaped with a short stem. The capsize varies between 5 and 30 mm in diameter. Common on branches of needle-leaved trees on dry, poor soil.

Pine Cone

Pine cone

Regular visitors of this site will have noticed that the last few weeks not many entries were posted. This is because I don’t have a lot of new material to show. Partly due to the time of the year in which I can’t find many subjects to photograph and partly of the dull weather.

A few weeks ago I took a pine cone with me which I found during a walk. It was still lying somewhere in my room, so I decided to make some close-up pictures.

White Saddle

White saddle - Helvella crispa

White saddle - Helvella crispa

This strange looking mushroom is a White saddle (Helvella crispa). It doesn’t really look like an ordinary mushroom but more like one which caught fire and melted.
The cap (what’s left of it) can be 1-5 cm across, the stem 3-10 cm long and up to 3 cm wide.
Sometimes the name Elfin saddle is used for species of Helvella.
