Agaatvlinderrups

Volgens mij heeft deze rups van de agaatvlinder (Phlogophora meticulosa) zich een beetje vergist in de temperatuur. Verstijft van de kou zit het dier nu open en bloot op een takje van de clematis te wachten op betere tijden.
Het is niet te hopen voor hem dat een vogel andere plannen met hem heeft.

Agaatvlinder

Eind maart van dit jaar vonden we een pop van een nachtvlinder achter een tafeltje in de tuin. Aan de pop kun je niet herkennen welke vlinder er uit zal komen, dus de pop maar in een bakje gedaan en afgewacht.
Vandaag is de vlinder uitgeslopen. Het blijkt te gaan om een agaatvlinder (Phlogophora meticulosa), een nachtvlinder uit de groep van de uilen (Noctuidae). Een heel algemene soort, maar daarom niet minder mooi.

Ook een beetje bevrijdingsdag voor deze vlinder…

Angle shades - Phlogophora meticulosa

Continuation of yesterday.

At the other end of the Angle shades (Phlogophora meticulosa) you see the anal prolegs.

Prolegs are stumpy legs that let the caterpillar climb very well, even up vertical surfaces. Caterpillars usually have five pairs of stumpy prolegs on the abdomen. Prolegs disappear when the larva changes into a moth.

Angle shades - Phlogophora meticulosa

Continuation of yesterday.

Since the larva of the Agle shades (Phlogophora meticulosa) was sitting on a leaf in my studio, I had plenty of time to make more pictures in detail.

Here you have a view on its head with ocelli (simple eyes), setae (sensory hairs) and three frontlegs.
Caterpillars have three pairs of so-called Thoracic legs. These are jointed legs, attached to their thorax. These six legs remain when the larva turns into a moth.

Angle shades - Phlogophora meticulosa

This morning I discovered this larva in a gap between the outdoor lamp and the wall on my shed, probably looking for place to pupate.
You don’t really expect to see larvae this time of the year.

It’s the caterpillar of Angle shades (Phlogophora meticulosa). The larvae of Angle shades can be found the whole year round. During mild winterdays you even can find them nourishing.
When in danger most of the larvae curl up and stay motionless for a while. A good moment to make a full frame picture.
